22 And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God.
23 Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
24 Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.
25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.
26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.
Hudson Taylor, a missionary to China in the late 1800’s said that verse 22 is more accurately rendered “have the faith of God.” I want to know what to believe about the matter I’m going to pray about. If I’ve got some sort of mountain I’m dealing with, I need to know what God is saying to it so I will say what He is saying, speaking His will not my wishful thinking. How can I discover God’s will ?
First, read your Bible. The best is to have a systematic reading plan, like the chapter in Proverbs that goes with the day’s date. That way there is a certain objectivity built into your seeking God. I’m sure you heard of the man who randomly opened his Bible and pointed to a verse: “And he went out and hung himself.” He didn’t think that was right so he tried again: “Go and do likewise.” One more try brought him to “What you do, do quickly.” Had he been a daily Proverbs reader, he would have seen something like: “When a man’s way pleases the Lord, He makes even His enemies be at peace with him.” What should he do? Seek ways to please the Lord and expect peace in his life.
I once had a job with a guy who did remodels and decks. Several guys were ripping him off with wasting time, and materials, showing up late, etc. I couldn’t decide whether or not to rat them out. Turned out that one of my proverbs that day said that a good way to bring trouble on yourself is to give a negative report on someone. So I didn’t say anything and in no time the boss discovered what was up and gave me a raise and showed them a pink slip.
Second, learn to hear God’s voice. When you are wondering whether your thought is coming from the devil, yourself, or God remember Hebrews 4:12 : God’s word divides between soul and spirit and judges the thoughts and intents of the heart. God gives His huge peace when saying, “Yes, that’s My will.” Colossians 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ umpire in your heart.” OK now you’ve got a handle on knowing what God is believing, and it is to say something like, “Mountain, get out of my life!” without doubting, but believing that what you say will happen. Yes, don’t doubt, but believe in your heart that you already have the things you are asking for.
One other thing . . . be sure to forgive anyone any wrong they have done to you or God won’t forgive you the wrongs you have done. Unconfessed sin breaks down your prayer life, and so do unforgiven wrongs.
Don’t make the mistake of refusing to forgive because it’s too big to let go, or they owe you too much. Jesus paid for all wrongs at the Cross — receive your forgiveness, freely give it away anytime needed.
